How HDI Drove Referral-Based Registrations With an Incentive Program

HDI Conference & Expo, part of UBM Tech’s HDI portfolio, wanted new ways to grow attendee registrations beyond its existing acquisition channels. With GleanIn’s social referral marketing solution, the team looked to tap into word-of-mouth by making it easier for attendees and alumni to refer colleagues, then further boost participation with a $50 Amazon gift card incentive for both the referrer and the new registrant.

GleanIn powered the referral broadcasts, tracking, and attribution, while a third-party fulfillment partner distributed the gift cards. The 2018 program delivered strong results: 16.22% of registrants shared referral links, 40.7% of personal invites converted, 9% of total registrations were attributable to GleanIn referrals, and those attendees generated $171,000 in revenue at an approximate cost of $14 per attributable attendee.
