National Geographic launches Into the Amazon with Gladeye after a 2-year expedition

National Geographic embarked on a two-year expedition to document the Amazon and sought to translate this complex scientific and cultural research into an accessible digital experience for its audience. The challenge was to move beyond traditional media and create an immersive, interactive journey that would bring the Amazon's ecosystems to life. They partnered with the digital agency Gladeye to achieve this.

Gladeye developed a highly visual and interactive web experience for National Geographic, leveraging WebGL technology to seamlessly blend 2D and 3D elements. The solution incorporated satellite imagery and terrain data to create immersive scenes, such as a 3D map tracking a bear's journey, and used National Geographic's extensive media catalog to guide users through the rainforest. The project was a major success, earning critical acclaim and winning multiple Webby Awards in 2025 for its innovative use of technology in science and education.
