Northwood University, which supports students, emergency scholarships, athletics, and academic programs through the Northwood Fund, wanted to test whether crowdfunding could effectively engage alumni and supporters. The university partnered with GiveSmart and used its mobile-friendly fundraising and donor management platform for a 3-day pilot campaign.

With GiveSmart, alumni captains quickly created crowdfunding pages on their smartphones and shared them through email, text, and social media. The pilot exceeded its $2,500 goal in 72 hours, drew 56 alumni and supporters, and raised more than $2,700, prompting a $10,000 matching gift offer and plans to scale the effort toward $25,000 and eventually more than $75,000 in contributions.
