How Canteen Australia managed to triple their expected income on their very first Facebook Challenge

Canteen, an Australian not-for-profit supporting young people impacted by cancer, wanted to diversify beyond face-to-face fundraising and test Facebook fundraising as a new income source. Working with GivePanel, they launched their first Facebook Challenge, “100 Sit-ups a Day in November,” using Facebook ads, a Facebook group, and fundraising tools to bring supporters into a digital fundraising journey.

GivePanel helped Canteen capture and match fundraiser data, steward supporters with email and on-page messaging, and provide guidance on Facebook Challenge setup and execution. The campaign exceeded expectations, attracting 5,200 group members, 1,715 active fundraisers, and more than AU$368,000 raised—over triple the original AU$120,000 target—and Canteen has since planned to run Facebook Challenges as an ongoing annual fundraising stream.
