A GitLab Case Study
HackerOne, the hacker‑powered security platform, was hampered by fragmented tooling and slow CI/CD pipelines that disrupted handoffs across its distributed engineering teams as it scaled. To improve developer velocity, deployment speed, and developer happiness, HackerOne adopted GitLab (GitLab Ultimate) to replace separate source control, CI, and security tools.
Using GitLab’s integrated source management, CI/CD, security features and APIs, HackerOne consolidated workflows, built bots to auto‑open dependency update merge requests, and tied deployments to Slack for faster visibility. With GitLab, pipeline time fell from about 60 minutes to 8 minutes (~7.5x faster), deployments increased from roughly 1/day to 4–5/day (≈5x faster), and the team reports saving significant engineer time (conservatively 4–5 hours saved daily), along with cheaper, more frequent security scans and reduced context switching.
