A GitLab Case Study

360i decides to move away from SVN

360i, a leading digital media agency behind campaigns for brands like Oreo and Toyota, faced growing problems with their legacy SVN revision control: limited collaboration, frequent accidental breakages on commit, and escalating storage demands. To address these issues, associate director Keith Harris evaluated alternatives and chose GitLab — deploying an on‑premises, open‑source Git-based platform to meet management’s security requirements while giving developers a more user-friendly workflow.

GitLab was rolled out to production so that all new projects use GitLab (SVN only supports old projects awaiting migration), and the team immediately saw stronger collaboration, faster bug identification and fixes via the issue tracker, easier documentation through the integrated wiki, and clearer workflows from improved permissions. The open-source nature of GitLab also enabled internal contributions (one change was merged into GitLab v6.0), increased developer satisfaction, and opened opportunities to replace other department tools with a customized GitLab setup.
