A GitHub Case Study
McKesson, a global healthcare company, was struggling to unify a rapidly growing developer organization spread across many teams and technology stacks, especially after mergers and acquisitions. Although McKesson had used GitHub for years, its environment wasn’t standardized or optimized, and some teams still lacked a version control system.
GitHub helped McKesson create McKesson Labs, a standardized DevOps stack and Developer Services team built around GitHub, GitHub Actions, and security features. The result was a shift from more than 30 siloed engineering groups to a cohesive model supporting over 25 teams worldwide, with 406 developers and 95 teams added in GitHub between November 2019 and April 2020. McKesson also eliminated more than 100 manual steps over three months, reduced the DevOps journey from three steps to less than a day, and saved about $350,000 per team.
