3M transforms its software toolchain to bring cutting-edge science to customers, faster

3M, a global manufacturer with more than 90,000 employees and 60,000 products, needed a more secure and efficient way to manage its scattered software codebases and complex development workflows. The company was struggling with knowledge silos, multiple tools, and fragmented CI/CD processes, so it turned to GitHub, including GitHub Advanced Security and GitHub Actions, to standardize development across teams.

GitHub helped 3M centralize code, support innersource collaboration, and automate build, test, deploy, and security workflows in one place. The results were significant: 3M grew from about 400 deployments per 60 days in 2015 to 15,000, created nearly 3,000 innersource repos, and improved collaboration, transparency, and vulnerability management across the organization.
