A GigaSpaces Case Study
Stellantis, the global automaker formed from PSA and Fiat‑Chrysler with 14 brands and 6.5 million vehicles sold in 2021, faced an EU regulatory requirement to calculate and display CO2 emissions for every configured car. Their online configurator relied on a mainframe that handled only 200 requests/sec and had slow response times, while demand was expected to be an order of magnitude higher. A basic cache failed because billions of possible configurations and the need for multi-criteria lookups made single‑key caching impractical.
Working with Capgemini, Stellantis deployed GigaSpaces Smart DIH to mask irrelevant options, dramatically reduce configuration combinations, and serve data from an in‑memory, multi‑index data fabric. The solution—backed up to a database for high availability and delivered in 12 weeks—now serves over 95% of CO2 requests, processes 2,800 requests/sec, responds in 15–19 ms (vs. 200–300 ms on the mainframe), increases calculator capacity 15x, and ensures timely, accurate compliance while lowering mainframe costs.
