Groupe PSA, the second-largest carmaker in Europe with operations in 160 countries, faced regulatory requirements to calculate and display CO2 emissions for every configured vehicle — a lapse could incur heavy fines. Their online car configurator relied on a mainframe limited to ~200 requests/sec and with slow response times, while expected demand was ~3,000 requests/sec. An initial Redis-based cache failed because it couldn’t handle multi-criteria lookups or the billions of possible configurations without massive data duplication.

Gigaspaces’ InsightEdge Smart Cache was deployed between PSA Digital Apps and the mainframe, providing multi-criteria queries, fast aggregations, an SQL engine and in-RAM hot data with partitioning. The cache now serves over 95% of CO2 calculation requests, cutting response times to 15–19 ms (from ~200–300 ms), increasing application capacity 15x without mainframe upgrades, reducing infrastructure footprint 5x (6x smaller than Redis), scaling workload 20x, and going live within 12 weeks.
