CSX, a leading North American rail freight transporter, needed real-time insight and scalable notifications for complex routing and shipment tracking. Its Network Based Classing process had to model a 10,000‑node network with over 40,000 business rules, and classic databases couldn’t handle the complex processing and dynamic data models. At the same time, a Notifications and Subscriptions service had to support 160+ corporate customers—some consuming thousands of events—and scale to peak loads.

GigaSpaces Smart DIH (in‑memory data grid) was deployed to run the Network Based Classing logic (18 requests/sec) and a batch that processes 1 million transactions in under 20 minutes, while providing elastic storage for notification messages and subscription data. Results included 15 million pings per hour, a 60% reduction in DB2 MIPS, planning simulations cut from 45 minutes to seconds, roughly 100× performance improvements, and faster time‑to‑production.
