A Gigamon Case Study
University of Wisconsin–Madison, a leading research university handling massive data flows to collaborators like CERN, needed to scale its network monitoring as its Internet border grew from 20Gb to 100Gb. Their existing 10Gb monitoring tools could not keep up—causing dropped traffic and blind spots—and multiple departments required simultaneous access to full traffic visibility without introducing latency or points of failure.
UW‑Madison chose the Gigamon Visibility Platform with passive optical TAPs and GigaVUE fabric nodes to capture 100% of 100Gb and 10Gb traffic and forward it to security and troubleshooting tools. The deployment eliminated packet loss from monitoring, enabled cross‑departmental visibility, simplified troubleshooting (no intrusive mirroring), and allowed real‑traffic testing of security appliances—improving threat detection, operational confidence, and purchasing decisions.
