Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Delivers New Network and Application Monitoring Capability

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the UK’s largest acute hospital trusts supporting over 6,000 IT users and a wide range of clinical systems, needed deeper visibility into the traffic and transactions flowing across its network—especially for its new i‑Desktop clinical portal and Citrix users. Existing SNMP and basic application tools were insufficient for wire‑level analytics across the WAN and layers 2–7, and the trust wanted a way to filter and aggregate data so monitoring focused on critical applications without generating unnecessary cost.

The trust deployed a Gigamon GigaVUE Visibility Fabric node to aggregate packets from multiple network points, perform wire‑rate VLAN filtering and present a single clean feed to ExtraHop analysis tools. After a trial and implementation, the solution delivered 24x7 monitoring across the estate, enabled fine‑tuning of critical clinical applications, reduced analysis costs by excluding low‑priority traffic, and provided a scalable platform for future growth.
