A Gigamon Case Study
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) provides national-scale computing, storage and visualization resources to researchers and was expanding its network to support projects like the Blue Waters supercomputer. With open access requirements and multiple new 10Gbps WAN links, NCSA’s existing single 10Gbps passive tap could not scale to feed its Bro IDS and NetFlow tools, leaving gaps in intrusion detection and visibility.
NCSA deployed Gigamon GigaVUE-2404 Traffic Visibility Nodes to aggregate passive taps, replicate and load‑balance traffic to multiple IDS and NetFlow sensors, and apply filtering to reduce monitoring load. The centralized architecture ensured 100% visibility, active failover and scalable growth, improving intrusion detection, protecting research infrastructure, and meeting the availability and reliability needs of its users.
