Health System Increases Efficiency and Scalability with Structured Cabling and Network Visibility

WellSpan Health, a nonprofit healthcare system in central Pennsylvania with four hospitals, 90+ care locations and about 12,000 employees, faced an aging, point-to-point fiber infrastructure that wasn’t TIA‑942–compliant. As the network moved from 1G to 10G, the organization needed a high‑density, structured layer‑one design and better traffic visibility to stop relying on user complaints and reactive troubleshooting.

WellSpan partnered with CABLExpress and Gigamon to deploy CABLExpress’s Skinny‑Trunk cabling, H‑Series and RSD enclosures and custom 16‑port tap modules, alongside Gigamon Visibility Fabric nodes and GigaSMART packet services. The combined solution delivered a reliable, scalable cabling platform and pervasive traffic visibility—enabling proactive monitoring, longer storage retention through packet slicing and de‑duplication, reduced troubleshooting time, and a more stable network foundation to support future growth and improved patient care.
