A Gigamon Case Study
The College of William & Mary, a public research university in Virginia, upgraded its campus network from multiple 1Gb links to 10Gb core distribution with 1Gb edge connections. Their existing monitoring setup—SPAN ports and unmanaged 1Gb TAPs feeding IDS and monitoring servers—could not provide adequate visibility on higher-speed links, yet the team needed to contain costs and continue using their 1Gb monitoring tools while improving capacity, VoIP support and resiliency.
To address this, they deployed a Gigamon GigaVUE-2404 Traffic Visibility Fabric node in the core to consolidate 10Gb TAP and SPAN traffic and apply intelligent filtering and Flow Mapping to aggregate and direct relevant traffic to 1Gb monitoring interfaces. The solution delivered centralized visibility, protected the university’s investment in existing tools, simplified management, enabled traffic load balancing and provided scalable monitoring for future growth while reducing cost and complexity.
