Clemson University Balancing Network Performance and Security to Connect and Protect Today’s Great Minds

Clemson University, a large research campus with students, labs, SCADA systems and critical services, needed to balance open network access with protection of sensitive data. A planned NetOps upgrade to 100Gb hardware that lacked NetFlow threatened the SecOps team’s visibility, making it harder to troubleshoot incidents, track problem systems and detect threats.

Clemson deployed Gigamon’s GigaSECURE platform (GigaVUE visibility nodes, GigaSMART traffic-intelligence modules and GigaVUE-FM management) to restore NetFlow and enable metadata, de-duplication, SSL/TLS decryption and load balancing. The change increased flow capacity from 30K to 70K flows/sec, boosted visibility by over 75%, cut false positives by more than 60% and optimized the security stack at 100Gb without compromising network performance.
