A Gigamon Case Study
The Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra — home to some 4,500 staff and over 20,000 students — faced a 2018 data breach that exposed gaps in visibility across a complex, hybrid IT environment. Concerned about increasingly sophisticated attacks (including ransomware and data exfiltration) and the education sector’s high targeting rate, ANU set a goal to adopt a Zero Trust approach and close visibility gaps across devices, networks, and cloud and on‑premises traffic.
ANU selected Gigamon as a core platform, deploying more than 350 devices across two data centers and 60+ sites, virtual TAPs for VMware hosts, GigaSMART for application intelligence, and integrations with asset discovery and ExtraHop analytics. The deployment delivered enterprise‑wide telemetry and high‑fidelity detection, uncovered vulnerable IoT and EOL devices, established a solid Zero Trust foundation, reduced the attack surface, and shifted ANU from reactive “whack‑a‑mole” responses to a more strategic security posture.
