University Health Network Identifies Ransomware Attacks with Gigamon

University Health Network (UHN), a major public healthcare and research network in Toronto, needed better visibility into its largely on‑premises environment—particularly East‑West traffic—to detect ransomware and feed data to multiple security tools without degrading switch performance, all while operating within public‑sector resource constraints.

UHN deployed Gigamon GigaVUE HC and TA appliances to copy, de‑duplicate, and forward traffic to tools like Armis and ForeScout. The solution was quick to install, preserved switch performance, reduced bandwidth and extended legacy appliance life, and enabled UHN to detect and stop suspected ransomware activity within about an hour, preventing damage.
