The University of South Carolina Improves Visibility After 100Gb Network Upgrade to Increase Traffic Capacity with Gigamon

The University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus, which serves more than 50,000 students and staff across 350+ acres, upgraded its core network from 10Gb to 100Gb and needed a monitoring and visibility solution that could scale with the dramatic increase in traffic and protect a large, distributed user base.

They deployed Gigamon’s visibility and traffic-intelligence stack—GigaVUE HC nodes with a GigaSMART de-duplication module in the primary data center, GigaVUE TA aggregators in a secondary center, and GigaStream for traffic distribution and load balancing—feeding a Deep Observability Pipeline into multiple IDS/ATP tools. The solution maintained pervasive visibility, delivered 6× packet de-duplication, cut irrelevant inbound traffic by ~75%, reduced latency, improved tool utilization, and balanced load across data centers.
