Slashing Probe Costs by 60 Percent — and Reinvesting in the Customer Experience

A large European‑based telecommunications service provider faced rising probe costs that were eroding ARPU and delaying projects: after a €117M network investment they found themselves spending an unbudgeted €11.7M on probes needed to monitor performance and customer experience. To prevent churn without adding more probing hardware, the operator needed a more efficient approach to network visibility.

Gigamon deployed a two‑phase solution—adding an HC3 appliance between aggregation and probes for filtering/flow mapping, de‑duplication, GTP correlation and tool load‑balancing, then replacing legacy aggregators with Gigamon TA25 units—cutting probe traffic by about 60% (with an additional 28% reduction using extra packet‑reduction techniques). The change delivered roughly €2.1M savings per site, paid for the solution via strong ROI, improved visibility and probe effectiveness, enabled reuse of existing probes for new sites, and freed budget to invest in customer‑experience initiatives.
