San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) - Customer Case Study

San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) needed to improve earthquake simulation workflows, where storage performance and network bandwidth were lagging behind compute power and post-processing visualization had become the bottleneck. GigaIO’s FabreX PCIe Network fabric, along with a storage pooling appliance and GPU accelerator pooling appliances, was used to support the seismic application awp-odc-insitu and ParaView for in-situ visualization.

GigaIO implemented an in-situ visualization approach that moved data from storage to compute, sent results directly to the visualization cluster in real time, and then returned only the necessary results to storage. This reduced the process from four steps to three, added just 2.5% to compute time, cut overall time-to-solution in half, and reduced network traffic and storage usage by about 50%.
