Mace - Customer Case Study

The customer, Mace, a global construction and consultancy firm, faced the significant challenge of carrying out essential civil works on a primary taxiway at the busy Heathrow Airport. The project required meeting the highest standards while minimizing disruption to international travel, demanding a solution to reduce downtime and accelerate completion. The vendor, Giatec, was introduced through a partner, and its SmartRock concrete maturity sensors were identified as a potential tool to tackle this challenge.

Giatec's solution involved deploying wireless SmartRock sensors to monitor the concrete's temperature and strength gain in real time. This provided the project team with the data and confidence to determine that the taxiway could be reopened 14 days ahead of schedule. The results included significant time and cost savings, the elimination of core sampling, reduced health and safety risks, and the confirmation that the concrete had achieved its 30-year design strength. This also aligned with the airport's sustainability strategy by enabling the use of concrete mixes with lower CO2 emissions.
