Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - Customer Case Study

Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust faced a challenging cost improvement plan, needing to deliver 6% efficiency savings over three years without affecting patient care or breaching Monitor quality requirements. Through NHS Shared Business Services, the Trust worked with GHX and GHX Consulting, using GHX supply chain tools to improve visibility of procurement spend and build a sustainable savings program.

GHX implemented electronic purchase orders and invoices through the GHX Exchange, plus GHX Nexus for catalogue and contract management, supported by a bespoke Quality Impact Assessment tool and project management office. The Trust exceeded its 2011/12 CIP target, achieving £10.6 million in efficiency savings against a £10 million goal, and earned Monitor’s lowest risk rating of 5 with no regulatory concerns.
