Veas uses Gexcon to assess risk for 600,000 residents with 3D terrain modelling

VEAS, a wastewater treatment plant in Norway, required a risk assessment for a new liquid biogas plant to gain regulatory approval. The challenge was that an initial analysis using simple 2D tools produced overly large risk zones that conflicted with nearby homes and businesses because it did not account for the complex, hilly terrain. This is why they engaged Gexcon.

Gexcon used its FLACS computational fluid dynamics software to create a detailed 3D model of the terrain and simulate gas dispersion. This approach revealed that hills provided significant shielding, channeling the gas away from elevated residential areas. As a result, Gexcon's analysis proved the new plant's risk zones did not affect the nearby houses, enabling VEAS to obtain regulatory approval with a more accurate and less restrictive risk assessment.
