A Gexcon Case Study
The European Spallation Source (ESS) needed to manage the risk of an accidental hydrogen release within the confined tunnel of its proton accelerator to comply with Swedish safety regulations (ATEX). Their challenge was to accurately define the flammable zones from a potential leak. To address this, ESS engaged the vendor Gexcon to perform detailed 3D dispersion modelling using their FLACS software.
Gexcon utilized FLACS to simulate the hydrogen release, accounting for the complex tunnel geometry and ventilation. This provided ESS with an accurate prediction of the ATEX zones and a powerful visualization of the hazard. The results, which were accepted by the Swedish Rescue Services, gave ESS deeper insights to implement safety measures and adjust operational conditions. Gexcon's expertise delivered an efficient and cost-effective solution, improving overall safety awareness at the facility.
