How an indie-game studio created an award-winning, accessible video game with Stark

Harlow, an indie-game studio founded by Arman Nobari, faced the challenge of creating a holistically accessible video game without a guidebook. The developer was determined to build a game that would not exclude players with cognitive stress or physical disabilities but encountered numerous game-specific accessibility roadblocks that standard software tools could not address.

Using Stark’s suite of products, particularly its Figma plugin and Contrast Checker, the studio integrated accessibility directly into its design workflow. Stark's tools and educational resources enabled Harlow to efficiently meet WCAG AA and AAA compliance, saving a quarter of development time. The resulting game, also named Harlow, was published in 2022 and was named a Gold Winner at the NYX Game Awards, proving that accessible design is both valuable and celebrated.
