The customer, Fortress Power, a maker of residential battery backup hardware, faced the challenge of differentiating its technically superior product in a market dominated by heavy marketing from competitors like Tesla. Their challenge was to make their complex hardware product easy and fun to use, simplify a complicated multi-step installation process, and translate numerous configuration options into clear value for the homeowner. They engaged the vendor, Germinate, to address these issues through app design.

Germinate implemented a dual-interface app solution, creating separate applications for installers and homeowners to ensure a successful installation and a smooth daily user experience. The solution was developed using a human-centered design process that included user interviews, rapid prototyping in Figma, and user testing. This approach repositioned Fortress Power as a leader in its field, resulting in a usable and valuable interface that empowered homeowners to control and optimize their power systems.
