A Geovariances Case Study
Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), a major Brazilian iron ore and steel producer, needed to support a tightly timed audit of its Casa de Pedra Mine reserves and improve the estimation of ore grades and size fractions. To do this, CSN adopted Geovariances’ Isatis software, a geostatistics tool used for multivariate modeling and reserve estimation.
Geovariances’ Isatis was used to co-estimate granulometric fractions and silica accumulation with cokriging, validate domains and variograms, and produce reserve figures that could stand up to external audit scrutiny. The implementation was completed over six months and helped CSN achieve a new proven and probable reserve of 1.631 billion tons of iron ore, a significant increase over the previous audit, with reserves sufficient for about 50 million tons of annual production.
