CEA - Customer Case Study

CEA Saclay’s LASE laboratory needed a way to handle very large autoradiography datasets generated from sensitive screens placed on facility floors, ceilings, and walls to detect radionuclides in nuclear waste and support decommissioning and dismantling projects. The challenge was to integrate, quality-check, and accurately map hundreds of thousands of measurements, and CEA used Geovariances’ Kartotrak software to help process the data.

With Geovariances’ Kartotrak, CEA loaded the data, checked for acquisition errors, computed variograms, and generated 2D kriged radioactivity maps and kriging variance maps at 5 mm resolution. The solution helped identify hard-to-measure radionuclide hot spots, showed that only 20% of measurements were enough to produce good-quality maps with reduced risk, and improved sampling decisions for destructive analysis by pinpointing the most significant areas to test.
