The Town of Blacksburg Department of Public Works needed a robust telematics solution to deliver reliable, real-time fleet data. Rural connectivity issues and previous vendors’ unwillingness to use a better cellular carrier left the town with inconsistent signal, limited reporting and no accurate way to measure salt usage during snow events—forcing assumption-based decisions.

After a successful pilot using Geotab’s Public Works solution and IOX Winter Gateway, Blacksburg deployed the system on 45 dump trucks and pickups (plus two EVs), choosing the carrier with the best coverage. The result was consistent connectivity, specialized IOX reporting, vehicle/asset tracking and easier dashboards—enabling data-driven salt-usage tracking, material savings, clearer total-cost-of-ownership insights for budgeting, and fast, knowledgeable customer support.
