Sacramento County procures telematics to improve operations

Sacramento County, CA, which operates a 2,900-vehicle municipal fleet, struggled with limited resources, department silos, lengthy procurement cycles and unreliable telematics that prevented accurate speed and location data for driver coaching, utilization decisions and TCO analysis.

By adopting Geotab via the State of California contract, the county received no‑cost hardware and installation, simplified procurement and BAR CTP–enabled automated smog checks (saving about $50 per vehicle and reducing downtime). Geotab’s real‑time data and dashboards improved driver safety coaching, sped diagnostics, enabled proactive maintenance, supported fleet rightsizing and spurred broader departmental rollouts and potential car‑sharing—delivering measurable gains in utilization and total cost of ownership.
