Orkin - Customer Case Study

Orkin, a U.S.-based pest control and home services company serving over 1.7 million customers with a fleet of roughly 10,000 vehicles, sought to reduce its environmental impact and fuel costs by cutting vehicle idling. A 20-minute in-cab alert hadn’t changed behavior—idling rose with fleet size and was costing the company over $1 million (about $1.22M in 2019)—so Orkin launched a targeted program to change driver habits.

Using Geotab GO telematics and customized driver scorecards, Orkin gamified the effort with a three-month “Low Idle — Wins Title” contest, regular idle reports, and prizes to drive engagement. The result: an 8.4% reduction in total idle time over the quarter (estimated $50K saved during the contest, with projected annualized savings up to $250K), dramatic individual and branch improvements (e.g., most improved driver cut idling by 99.5%, a top branch reduced idling by 87%), and measurable emissions and maintenance benefits.
