Natural Resources Canada navigates electrification using telematics

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) needed to identify which government fleet vehicles were best suited for electrification as part of Canada’s Greening Government Strategy and the Clean Energy Ministerial EV initiative. The challenge was to evaluate hundreds of light-duty vehicles across varied climates and duty cycles, factor in higher upfront EV costs, and reliably predict operational impacts and ROI to guide procurement decisions.

Using Geotab’s Electric Vehicle Suitability Assessment (EVSA) and telematics data, NRCan modeled daily usage, range impacts, costs and ROI to recommend suitable EV replacements. An initial analysis of 270 vehicles found 157 suitable for low‑carbon replacement—potentially saving $1.3M over the fleet lifetime and reducing GHGs by 30%. Expanded to 1,237 vehicles across seven agencies, the work showed $4.85M in TCO savings over seven years (avg. 13.7% per fleet), annual CO2 reductions of 1,200 tonnes and 536,000 liters of fuel saved, giving departments the data-driven confidence to proceed with electrification.
