Kentucky Transportation Cabinet improves efficiency while changing employee perception of telematics devices

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is a state agency responsible for 60,000 lane miles and a 4,000‑vehicle fleet. Although Geotab devices had been installed for years, limited time and resources left telematics data underused, manual mileage and material tracking led to errors, and some employees distrusted the devices as potential disciplinary tools. Transportation engineer Randi Feltner was charged with turning the incoming data into actionable insights focused on vehicle health, engine diagnostics, and mileage.

By using Geotab GO data and eliminating manual entry, KYTC implemented a true maintenance program, real‑time vehicle diagnostics, equipment location tracking, and API‑driven material reporting for winter operations. Results included greater accuracy and reduced human error, improved employee perception (including a high‑profile incident where telematics data cleared a driver of a speeding allegation), and stronger operational evidence to justify budget and efficiency decisions.
