Improving Driving Behavior in the Field

Black & Veatch is a global engineering and construction firm with more than 11,000 employees and a 450-vehicle U.S. fleet supporting energy, water and telecom projects. With many lone workers driving long distances—some up to 7,000 miles a month—the company faced a critical challenge: reduce accidents and liability by improving driving behavior and motivating a diverse group of field drivers.

Working with Geotab, Black & Veatch implemented a consolidated telematics platform and a customized Driver Safety Scorecard focused on speeding, seat-belt use and harsh maneuvers, paired with regular reporting and individualized coaching. Within a year the fleet safety score improved 28%, accidents fell from over 5 to 3 per million miles, and high-risk drivers dropped 87%, generating the equivalent of roughly 30 fewer accidents annually while improving driver engagement and customer service visibility.
