California Department of Conservation sees 100% improvement in driver behavior

The California Department of Conservation (DOC), a Sacramento-based state agency managing a 120-vehicle mixed fleet, needed to replace an underperforming telematics vendor that gave infrequent location “pings,” inaccurate off-road speeding reports, billing and hardware issues (including suspected battery drain), and lacked driver check-in reminders. These problems hampered safety monitoring and fleet reporting, prompting the DOC to seek a more reliable, government-approved solution.

The DOC switched to Geotab for its stronger hardware, real-time and customizable reporting, and safety-focused features like audible warnings and driver fobs. Deployment of all 120 vehicles was completed ahead of schedule, fob usage reached 100%, monthly violations fell from 30–40 to 1–2 (with months of zero), battery-drain concerns were resolved, and automated mileage reporting is expected to save about 16 staff hours per month—improving safety, efficiency, and public image.
