British Antarctic Survey Pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is a leading polar research organisation that operates a mixed fleet of snowmobiles, groomers and other vehicles across remote Antarctic terrain. With no cell service and long field missions, BAS needed a way to track teams in real time, record stops (fueling, camps, hazards) and improve safety and environmental accountability in extreme, isolated conditions.

Geotab delivered a custom telematics solution—MyGeotab with ruggedised GO devices, an IRIDIUM satellite connection, API integration and a bespoke switch box (distress, refueling, crevasse, biological break, camp). Devices were insulated and sealed for sub-zero use; distress signals go straight to station commanders and trips are fully mapped. The result: live location and stop data, faster emergency response, better route planning, improved fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact, with initial rollout to 20 units and plans to expand.
