Anti-Idling Program Slashes Fleet’s Fuel Costs

Crown Uniform & Linen Service, a family‑owned Boston company founded in 1914, operates a leased fleet of 30 Freightliner MT45 step vans that make 30–40 stops and typically drive 100–150 miles per day. Unnecessary engine idling — which averaged 70 minutes per driver per day — was driving up fuel costs and undermining the company’s sustainability goals.

Partnering with Sustainable America’s IdleFree Fleet Program and using Geotab telematics to baseline and monitor idling, fleet supervisor Dave Hardy implemented daily reporting and driver retraining with manager follow‑up and a 10‑minute idling target. Within months idling fell to 7 minutes per driver per day, saving roughly $1,500–$2,000 per month in fuel, and the anti‑idling program is being extended to the sales fleet.
