University of San Diego creates a flexible Learning Commons with Gensler

The University of San Diego (USD) faced classroom capacity issues and needed new spaces for interaction, study, and learning on its campus. To address this challenge, the university partnered with the vendor Gensler for programming and design services to create a new academic facility.

Gensler designed the Learning Commons as a large, flexible heart for the building to accommodate a wide variety of activities from studying to classes. A key feature of the solution was designing every space to open directly to the outdoors, leveraging the local climate and extending the learning environment into an activated courtyard and promenade. This design by Gensler successfully created active and flexible spaces to meet the university's needs.
