A Gensler Case Study
Pittsburgh International Airport required an upgrade to meet modern standards for travelers and to reflect the region's identity. The aging facility no longer efficiently served nearly 10 million annual passengers. The airport partnered with vendor Gensler, along with HDR and luis vidal + architects, on a terminal modernization program to address these challenges.
Gensler designed a new 811,000-square-foot terminal that consolidates all major airport functions into a single, streamlined structure. The solution featured biophilic design, regional materials, and public art to celebrate Pittsburgh's character. The results were significant: curbside to airside travel time was cut by 50%, baggage claim became two times more efficient, and the project saved $18 million in operational and maintenance costs. The new terminal also accommodates 13-15 million passengers annually and creates a welcoming civic gateway for the region.
