Case Study: ORIGINS Astral Lodge creates a regenerative rainforest retreat with Gensler

ORIGINS Astral Lodge uses Gensler to source 80% of furniture on-site and hire 90% of construction workers locally

Origins Astral Lodge, a celestial retreat in Costa Rica, sought to create a luxury hospitality experience that deeply connected guests to the natural landscape and local Maleku cultural heritage. They partnered with the architecture and design firm Gensler to achieve this vision through a regenerative design approach for their new lodge.

Gensler, collaborating with a local architect, designed the lodge to blur the boundaries between the built space and the natural environment, integrating native heritage with cosmic elements. The solution featured seven private villas, on-site crafted furniture from fallen wood, and handmade decor from Maleku artisans. The measurable impacts of Gensler's work included hiring 90% of construction workers from nearby communities to foster local economic growth and crafting over 80% of the furniture on-site, ensuring the project benefited the region.
