NEXT reimagines its 80,000-square-foot Lakeside store with Gensler

Gensler was engaged by NEXT to reimagine its largest-ever store, an 80,000-square-foot anchor location within the Lakeside Shopping Centre. The challenge was to transform a vacant former department store into a vibrant retail destination that would set a new, ambitious tone for the brand's future in large-format locations and breathe new life into a dormant part of the shopping centre.

The solution designed by Gensler introduced two expansive new atriums to flood the interior with daylight and create a sense of openness. The design established a continuous flow between the two trading floors through generous circulation spaces and grand staircases. An all-new material palette featuring natural stone, metallics, and timber reflected the brand's evolution. This architectural transformation successfully reactivated a key arrival point for the mall, creating a dynamic destination that encourages customer exploration and dwell time.
