Nationwide Children’s Hospital builds an 87,000-square-foot hybrid learning hub with Gensler

Nationwide Children's Hospital faced a challenge common to many pediatric hospitals: a lack of space to train its growing workforce and securely store its ever-increasing amount of data. The hospital needed a centralized solution that would bring diverse teams together while balancing transparency, security, and real estate costs. To address this, they worked with the vendor Gensler on a design for a new hybrid-use facility.

Gensler's solution was to create a first-of-its-kind, data-enabled learning hub in a single structure. The design integrated a 300–600-person conference center and medical simulation labs on the lower floors with a secure enterprise data center on the upper floors, all concealed behind a unifying facade. This innovative approach by Gensler transformed a would-be insular structure into a connected, multidisciplinary campus hub that activates a central plaza while securely housing critical technology, effectively creating new harmony between utility and community.
