Kirk Gibson Foundation designs a 40,000-square-foot Parkinson’s wellness center with Gensler

The Kirk Gibson Foundation partnered with architecture and design firm Gensler to create Michigan's largest standalone wellness center dedicated to the Parkinson's community. Their challenge was to reimagine a former fitness facility into a first-of-its-kind, activity-based environment that would support individuals living with Parkinson's, their families, and caretakers.

Gensler's design solution was guided by eight core principles to create a supportive, calming, and navigable 40,000-square-foot center. The facility features an open hub for activities like spin and tai chi, a 360-degree walking track, and inclusive design elements to promote ease of use and dignity. The resulting Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s Wellness provides free therapy services and is anticipated to serve 60,000 annual visits, standing as a transformative resource for the community.
