A Gensler Case Study
The customer, a confidential senior living project in Guangzhou, faced the challenge of adapting to the needs of China's rapidly growing aging population. Initial senior living developments were often remote and isolated, which clashed with cultural values emphasizing family proximity. Gensler was engaged to create an integrated "urban infill" solution that would keep seniors close to their existing communities.
Gensler's solution involved the adaptive reuse of an historic heritage site, preserving 85% of the existing structure and 35% of the MEP systems. The firm introduced a new glazed roof made of glass bricks, maintaining historical integrity while reinterpreting the space. This approach by Gensler minimized environmental impact through reduced demolition and resulted in a sustainable senior living community that preserves cultural heritage.
