Dataland creates a 5-gallery, 1.5-billion-pixel museum with Gensler

Dataland, a multi-sensory immersive museum of AI art, faced the challenge of moving beyond the traditional "white box" museum model. They needed to create a new architectural approach to support unprecedented, real-time, data-driven art and meet high expectations for interactivity, all while working within exacting technical constraints for a digital infrastructure that did not yet exist. The vendor, Gensler, was engaged to provide design services for this project.

Gensler's solution was to design the museum as a fully immersive environment where the architecture served as invisible infrastructure. In collaboration with Arup, they engineered a concealed "nerve center," integrating an overhead catwalk to route over 200 miles of cabling and hide 84 projectors and 250 speakers. The impact was the establishment of a new cultural institution typology where spatial design and digital media seamlessly coexist. Gensler's design transformed the gallery visit into a living canvas, successfully erasing visible infrastructure to place the art center stage and achieve total immersion.
