City of Baltimore reactivates main streets with Gensler in 630+ volunteer hours

The City of Baltimore launched the Design for Distancing challenge to reactivate its main streets and arts districts, seeking interventions to help local businesses operate safely during a public health crisis. The city engaged the design firm Gensler and other partners to address this challenge.

Gensler worked to reimagine the 1700 block of Charles Street and North Avenue, creating healthy and safe outdoor spaces for businesses to flourish. The solution, built with over 630 hours of volunteer work, provided small businesses with the means to operate outdoors safely. This intervention offered tangible economic viability for Baltimore businesses during the crisis.
