City of Avon Lake reclaims 17 acres of waterfront with Gensler

The City of Avon Lake faced the challenge of repositioning the site of a recently decommissioned coal-fired power plant. They collaborated with the vendor Gensler on a master plan to attract new development and find a new use for the historic facilities as part of a shift away from carbon-intensive energy.

Gensler created a master plan that features the adaptive reuse of historic structures into housing, office space, and public attractions. The solution included sustainably redeveloping the surrounding site to connect the city back to Lake Erie, providing 17 acres of publicly accessible waterfront land for a beach, paths, and habitat restoration. Gensler's work established a model for communities looking to redevelop obsolete power plant sites.
