World Rugby turned to Genius Sports to create the Official Fantasy Rugby World Cup 2023 game for the Rugby World Cup in France. The challenge was to engage new, casual, and avid fans on its owned digital platforms, reduce drop-off during the seven-week tournament, and capture first-party user data while delivering an easy-to-play, socially competitive experience.

Genius Sports built a bespoke, fully branded fantasy game inside the Official World Cup app and website, with auto-selection, educational content, unlimited daily transfers, boosters, and leaderboards to drive engagement. The solution integrated user data into World Rugby’s database and delivered strong results, with 457,000 fans registered, 79% of users new to World Rugby’s database, and 43% under age 35; the game also surpassed targets and will be reused for the HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 series.
